So I’ve been researching my options on the T-44 and it seems to me that the tier VIII 122 mm gun just isn’t worth it compared to the tier VII 100 mm.
Yes, the damage is impressive, but the fire rate of the 100 mm is double that of the 122 mm and the aim time and accuracy is significantly better.
Thoughts on why one would choose the 122 mm other than raw damage? (pen is even slightly better on the 100 mm)
VIII | 122 mm D-25-44 | 175/217/61 | 390/390/530 | 3.95 | 0.42 | 3.2 | 2600 | 106370 | |
VII | 100 mm LB-1 | 190/247/50 | 250/250/330 | 8 | 0.35 | 2.1 | 2400 |

I believe you’ve made a very strong argument for the 100 mm.
While the alpha of the 122 seems superior, with 20% RNG the the low RoF its not going to do as well as one would want.
At only 3.9 rounds /min the 122 could really be gimped by RNG.
You could miss twice as many shots with the 100 mm (8 rounds/minute) and still come out ahead.
Add in the better pen of the 100 mm, shorter aim time and lower dispersion and it becomes clear the 100 is superior.
Equipment such as a rammer would increase the DPM further.
I really like most of the 100 mm Soviet guns.

LB-1 100mm for sure. While some may make the 122mm work by steaming up to something and blasting it and then running away to reload and do it again, the LB-1 is a much more versatile gun with its DPM, accuracy for sniping, quicker reload for knife fights, and greater penetration. All the 122mm has is alpha and better use of HE if needed.
Sometimes the top gun isn’t really the top gun.

the 122mm has some overmatch benefits, which is the only advantage afaik.

100mm all the way. The T44 isnt actually half bad after the t8 mm changes. 122 can be funny, the the poor pen combined with trash gun handling make it less able to deal dmg effectively.
Getting good with the T44 and 100mm gun puts you in the right mindset to do well in the higher tier RUmeds as well

I used the 100mm to grind to the 430 and T54.
Loved that gun on the T44, not so much on the T54.

I used to carry the 100, but like Rodney Dangerfield, it gets no respect, high tiers just shrug off 240 dmg and charge you, especially when you get spotted.
Using bushes, manouvering and high 300s low 400s dmg on the other hand gives them something to think about.
Granted, you need to be very picky when taking your shots, 175 pen on regular is quite anemic, prem pen is decent but would still troll you, the HE dmg is a godsend, especialy on those pesky thin armored lights (jumped a 500 and change health Lynx 6×6, the guy didn’t even turn his turret thinking, i can take a shot, only to get vaporized by a 122 HE round) and TDs.
Definetly not a brawler, you save your health as much as you can, get your 1rst shot out to get a little advantage repeat if u can get away with it, relocate and then repeat again.
Games where you get 2 to 3k dmg (wich are not as uncommon as one would think), even when you lose, are nothing to scoff at.
The 122 is definetly an acquired taste, not for the instant gratification type.
I find it more fun (specially when shredding 350-440 dmg on unsuspecting heavies), but maybe that’s just me.
On 10-11 seconds reloads, it would be a decent buff.
